Flapjack World Domination

So Catwoman emailed me with her address. Now no sad faces, I don't want any tears, luckily for you I prepared an extra box of flapjacks and the winner is...my blister Little Miss Moi. Little Miss Moi was the only commenter who really begged, she was down on her knees desperate for those flapjacks. So LMM email me your address and a package will be winging it your way too. As the rest of you are salivating over these flapjacks I've decided to send you all a packet. This has nothing to do with my attempt to gain flapjack world domination. I make them most weeks for the children to bring to school (because apparently despite the syrup and sugar they are healthy due to the oats). So each week I'll pack up a box and send it to you, if you send me your address. Flapjacks will be sent out in a first come first serve so get those addresses emailed.

When was the last time you bought a new pillow?

July 2006, only £3.99 in Ikea and so cosy.

Approximately how many hours per week do you spend surfing the ‘net?

Oh no, don't ask me this. If I work it out I might faint from the shock or decide to quit blogging and I just can't do that, please...don't...ask...me..that...(heart beating furiously).

Main Course

What’s the highest you remember your temperature being?

I remember in Greece that it was very hot and being told it was 110 oF and in Portugal it was about 35 oC. I'm not sure which is the hottest but both times were pretty damn hot for an English girl (who does love the sun and isn't a pale skinned beauty).

Dessert

Fill in the blanks: When I ____________, I _____________.

When I snore I grind my teeth. Is it any wonder poor Joules suffers from sleep deprivation?

Avondale

Yesterday we went to Avondale House for our Picnic and were joined by Sally and her three delightful children Chris, Sam and Chloe as well as Dillon's friend Rory. Avondale House is situated about 50km from Dublin in Rathdrum, Wicklow and was the home of Charles Stewart Parnell who is said to have been one of the great Irish political leaders. Avondale house is set in a large park and woodland, if you don't want to take a tour of the house you are charged a nominal €5 to park your car and from here there is a whole days entertainment ahead of you.

We started with our picnic, on previous occasions we have barbecued here, before setting off for a walk. There are many different paths and walks to choose from ranging from half an hour up to five hours. The route we chose took about two and a half hours with some natural breaks for us to have a rest, enjoy the scenery, have a drink and paddle in the river. We ended up at the house where we enjoyed a cooling ice lolly and the children had a second burst of energy in playground before it was time to head home after a very enjoyable day.

Have you ever “re-gifted” anything? If so, what was it and who did you pass it on to?

I frequently 're-gift' toys the children are given from friends at their parties. They may be toys the children already have or ones they would never play with. They go into my present box and when the children have a party to go to they choose a gift from the box that will suit the birthday child.

Dessert

Name something you need from the store.

Food Glorious Food

Reading the comments on Mum's site gave me the idea for today's post. Pamela wrote:

"such a pleasure making new friends. I have 104 feed on my bloglines. When certain ones light up - I get excited and can't wait to get home from work to read. Thanks for reading my place. Wish we could all get together for tea and coffee. (Beccy can bring the flapjacks!! Hey the hubby made them last night and wow'd our friends. Everybody wanted the recipe)"

To which Mum replied:

"Pamela and I thought I had a lot links! A bloggers convention would be nice. I always eat far too many goodies when I'm visiting Beccy and would you believe it- this is the girl who hated cooking as a teenager".

This got me thinking about when I first started to enjoy cooking. I don't think I ever hated cooking as a teenager it was just that Sam loved it and was so good and creative that I let her do it all (I think I was also quite lazy). During the holidays when Mum and Dad were at work Sam would blackmail me by saying she'd make lunch and I had to do all the other chores such as clean the bathroom, change the bedding, walk the dog, go to the shops and vacuum. I agreed because Sam would make the most delicious combinations, if I was left to my own devices I would make a bowl of Smash and top it with baked beans and a fried egg (I would then eat it out of the bowl with a spoon).

I remember making Victoria sandwiches and fairy cakes as a child and on one occasion preparing and cooking a Sunday roast complete with homemade menu and seat placings but I'm sure Mum must have helped me with the meal. Also this was back in the days before dishwashers so whatever was used for cooking had to be washed, dried and put away by the chef, that was a big reason not to cook (did I mention I was lazy).

Then there are the disasters. The first time was when I boiled a pan of potatoes. I was quite worried and Sam told me what to do. I peeled the potatoes, salted the water and watched them until they started to boil. I turned down the heat and ran off upstairs to finish the game of monopoly with Sam. What seemed like only a few minutes later (but was obviously longer) Sam commented on the strange odour. We rushed downstairs to find that I had increased the heat when I thought I had turned it down, all the water had boiled away and the potatoes were mush stuck to the bottom of the pan. I then had to confess to Mum when she got home from work! (It was a long time before I was asked to boil potatoes again).

Another time Sam made pancakes, during her making of them we got into an argument (as sisters do) and I (being the stubborn minx I am) refused to eat them so she put them in the oven on the melamine plate to keep warm until I stopped sulking. Suffice to say the plate exploded and it was time for another confession.

In my defence I think these incidents and the fact that Sam was so good put me off cooking for a long time. Instead I became chief peeler of vegetables and washer upper and vowed never to cook again. I told Mum I would live off cheese sandwiches and cold baked beans eaten from a tin (no washing up) when I went to university. Then I gave up eating meat (Sam had left home by now) and Mum agreed as long as I cooked an alternative for myself and slowly my love affair with cooking started. While away at university I discovered the joys of entertaining and hosting dinner parties (even if half the budget was spent on booze)! Now I have a family I love preparing dinner from scratch and us all sitting down together at the end of the day to eat and share our news.

Stephanie has written a lovely post kind of about my family so pop over here to read it. In her post she makes references to the English not being the greatest of cooks. Now I could retaliate with...but I'm not instead I'll tell you about the great Fish 'n' Quips event that Sam has organised. It is a celebration of English food in the run up to St. Georges Day and is open to anyone who would like to play along. Read all about it here and if you think it sounds like fun sign up for it, I have.

As we're on the subject of food here is my Fridays feast:

When you travel, which mode of transportation do you prefer?

Private helicopter/plane would be my transport of choice. By boat is by far my least favourite along with coaches when you're stuck in the seat by the toilets (which smell) and are five months pregnant.

Soup

Have you ever met a blogging friend in person?

No, I'm fairly new to this bogging lark and have only met (virtually) two bloggers from Ireland, the rest of you live too far away. There's many I would love to meet so why don't y'all hop over to Ireland?

Salad

When was the last time you were really, really tired?

Last night. I got a virus back in 1992 and it wiped me out, ever since I get really tired and ill if I don't take good care of myself. I need lots of sleep and can sleep anywhere much to the amazement (and annoyance) of my family.

Main Course

If you could have dinner with any one fictional character from a book or movie, who would it be?

Oooh, that's tricky. My shallowness comes out here as I think of my eye candy (Mika) but I guess it would have to be Johnny Depp and no, he can't bring Vanessa! Ah I'm rereading the question and the character has to be fictional so how about Johhny Depp playing Captain Jack Sparrow? No, not allowed, OK how about Mr Darcy or another of Jane Austen's characters as long as we got to dine out in the Austen era and dance after.

Dessert
Fill in the blank: One day, I hope to see the snow topped mountains as I whoosh down the slopes on my skis along with my family.

Nine Words and Friday's Feast

This one is for the lads, nine words women use and what they really mean! This list was emailed to me so I've no idea who wrote the orginal list but it made me smile.

1.) Fine: This is the word women use to end an argument when they are right and you need to shut up.

2.) Five Minutes: If she is getting dressed, this means a half an hour. Five minutes is only five minutes if you have just been given five more minutes to watch the game before helping around the house.

3.) Nothing: This is the calm before the storm. This means something and you should be on your toes. Arguments that begin with nothing usually end in fine.

4.) Go Ahead: This is a dare, not permission. Don't Do It!

5.) Loud Sigh: This is not actually a word but is a non-verbal statement often misunderstood by men. A loud sigh means she thinks you are an idiot and wonders why she is wasting her time standing here and arguing with you about nothing. (Refer back to #3 for the meaning of nothing.)

6.) That's Okay: This is one of the most dangerous statements a women can make to a man. That's okay means she wants to think long and hard before deciding how and when you will pay for your mistake.

7.) Thanks: A woman is thanking you, do not question, or faint. Just say you're welcome.

8.) Whatever: Is a women's way of saying F@!K YOU!

9.) Don't worry about it, I got it: Another dangerous statement, meaning this is something that a woman has told a man to do several times, but is now doing it herself. This will later result in a man asking "What's wrong?" For the woman's response refer to #3.

Appetizer

What are you proud of?

My children although I'm not sure proud is a word I would really use.

Soup

What is the best thing you’ve ever won as a prize?

Winning my first tennis tournament at the age of 14 was pretty good (even though I won a wine glass which was not much good for a 14 year old); winning a tournament partnering Mum (she had already won it with Sam and wanted to win it with me as well); winning my first cash prize in tennis (£75, it paid for a trip to Legoland) but I guess the sweetest win was when I won the singles in my club championship in 2002. I hadn't really played singles for years and was up against against a really good Australian girl who had wiped me off the court the previous year. I played incredible tennis and three sets later emerged the victor. In answer to the question I guess I'm trying to say the buzz from winning was far better than the prizes I won.

Salad

Name something you do that is a waste of time.

Sometimes I think I spend too much time blogging but I rarely watch television now.

Main Course

In what year of your life did you change the most?

1993, when Dillon was born. Before Dillon was born I was a selfish, self centered person, giving birth to this amazing, gorgeous, totally helpless little babe totally changed my attitude and now someone else was the centre of my life, dependent on me to survive.

Dessert

Where is a place you consider to be very tranquil?

Anna Maria Island.

A challenge and a beautiful morning.

Mum is hosting next weeks Fun Monday , you can read about her challenge here.

The collage below is a collection of photographs I took last week when I went for a walk with my friend Sally. Sally is a Dublin girl born and bred and it is fast becoming a weekly tradition where I take her somewhere local for a walk that she has never been. Knocksink Wood is just outside Dublin and there are paths that wind through the trees and follow the river; bridges over the river; small beaches where children can paddle in the summer months, ponds brimming with frogspawn and a National Environmental Education Centre. It was a beautiful, sunny Spring morning and we had a lovely wander before our coffee and scone break.

Friday's Feast

It's time for another Friday Feast. For more information or to sign up for Friday's feast look here.

Appetizer

Who is your favourite news anchor/reporter? Why?

Not sure I have a favourite. I tend to watch the UK news (on the BBC of course) as I find it more interesting than the Irish news and England is my motherland!

Soup

Name 3 foods that are currently in your freezer.

Fish fingers (served in fresh white bread with butter and tomato ketchup is my decadence); parmesan cheese (I use a lot of it grated in recipes and someone told me to buy it in huge blocks to save money and store it in the freezer, it works for me) and homemade chicken stock (the best part of roasting a chicken is the lovely stock you can make).

Salad

If you were to have the opportunity to name a new town or city, what would you call it?

Haven't got a clue. I supose it depends on the country this new town was in. If it was in Ireland how about something like Bunford.

Main Course

What will most likely be the next book you read?

Don't know, my book club is meeting next week so will find out then.

Dessert

What's the first thing you notice about the opposite gender?

Truthfully height, hair and body shape. I like them tall, skinny and dark haired. Although of course I never judge any one on their looks but would spend time getting to know their personality etc etc...

Friday's Feast

Appetizer

Name two things that made you smile this week?

Winning our quarter final tennis match on Saturday and the snail Ben drew for an art competition.

Soup

Fill in the blank:

Don't you hate it when you go to bed early and the full dishwasher has not been switched on, the crumbs not wiped up and the cake not returned to the cake tin!

Salad

When you can't go to sleep, what is your personal remedy to help yourself drift into Lullabyland?

Luckily I'm one of those annoying people who just shuts their eyes and hey presto I'm in the land of nod. On the incredibly rare occasion (once a year maybe) that I can't I picture myself on a secluded beach, by the time I've selected who's joining me on the beach I'm asleep (shame really because I miss out on all the fun)!

Main Course

What is something about which you've always wondered but have not yet found a good answer?

I'm not sure I've always wondered something but just now I'm thinking why do people idolise and want to emulate those super skinny models/actresses/celebrities who resemble a lollipop. That is so not an attractive look.

Dessert

What is your favorite pasta dish?

That's a hard one, I love pasta but the best pasta dish I've ever eaten was in New York and I can't even tell you the name of the dish or the restaurant. We went there for Sam's 40th birthday so maybe she can remember and help me out.

Appetizer

What does the colour pink make you think of?

Truthfully, Barbie.

Soup

Name something you thought you had lost, but later found.

When I was a teenager I lost a gold chain my Mum gave me. My sister found it, told Mum but not me. The two of them asked me where it was, I said my bedroom and they really hassled me, laying on a mega guilt trip before admitting that they had found it.

Salad

In 3 words, describe this past week.

Cough, splutter, sneeze.

Main Course

What are you obsessed with?

I don't think I'm obsessed with anything but I love playing tennis and I love to win.

Dessert

What kind of perfume or cologne do you like to wear?

CK one
