You Are What You Eat

Barbara, one of my favourite food bloggers, tagged me last week with this meme.

If you were stuck on an island and could only eat one cuisine (e.g., French, Italian, etc.) for the rest of your life, what would it be? Why?

It would have to be Italian because pasta, pizza, tomatoes, bread, olive oil and ice cream sounds like a delicious balanced diet to me!

What is the most unusual food you've eaten?

I tried alligator tail in Florida and Sam's tongue in New York, (not literally her tongue but some of the tongue she had ordered in a restaurant, I think it was ox but I'm sure she'll correct me). Mum tricked us into eating rabbit as children which was not pleasant.

What is the most unusual food you've eaten and liked?

Freshly caught octopus on a Greek island, which reminds me I promised you the story of my moped accident.

What foods will you avoid eating (either because of a dietary choice or allergies or just plain don't like)?

Sam accuses me of eating with my eyes not my mouth, again not literally but I am loathe to try heart, pigs trotters and snout and kidneys. Liver served with onions and gravy I love.

Do you cook (and by that, I mean prepare a meal that you'd serve to friends)?

If you've been reading me a while you know I cook and I eat.

If yes, what is your favorite dish to prepare to impress someone?

I don't have a favourite. If I have plenty of time I love trying out new recipes.

When you go to a restaurant, what's your ordering strategy/preference?

I don't know that I have a strategy, I tend to order whatever takes my fancy. I often end up ordering fish as I love fish unlike my family so I rarely cook it at home.

Have you ever returned a dish or wine to the kitchen at a restaurant? Why?

I've never returned a dish or wine to the kitchen. I don't eat out often, (three children and the fact that Dublin is so expensive means eating out is a real treat). I really appreciate going out to dinner and have never had a dish I consider bad enough to return although I have ordered dishes to try and haven't liked them but that is down to personal taste.

How many cookbooks do you own?

I've just counted 56. Far too many and I don't use over half of them but I can't bear to throw them away. I also have four folders full of recipes I've torn from magazines, printed from the Internet or copied from friends books.

What is one food that you wouldn't want to live without?

One food? That is so hard. Thinking. Thinking. Thinking. Can I not choose two or three? Cheese (or garlic or bread).

I tag Emma (she loves memes), Frannie and Terri but only if you want to girls.

I managed to take some more photographs of Dillon opening his presents and cards. Feast your eyes on him because he's heading back into camera hibernation!

thanks for the tag! I have another tag I am working on, but I will get to it soon.

I love the pictures of Dillon! He does everything possible to avoid looking at the camera, huh? Nice lookin' kid, er young man, you got there.

I didn't know that Dublin was that expensive. I'll have to do some research.

56 cookbooks! I may just be in love with you!!! ;) I'll have to count mine for the meme, but I'm sure that you have me beat.

Hey, Beccy,

My Prizes arrived yesterday! Thanks so much!! I always wanted a tinsel wig!!

Steffi Dillon is really enjoying all the compliments!

Mum, I thought Dad would be pleased.

Frannie there's no pressure to do the meme.

Dillon kept moving as I was clicking away, he therefore approved of all the pics.

I believe Dublin is one of the most expensive places on earth! Even a pizza meal for two plus one bottle of wine and one starter would cost €70 which is around $100. We bought 5 slices of pizza in NY for $10 and most tasty it was too.

And they didn't taste too bad Asha!

Oh dear John but it's purple.

TAFKAP Glad your prize arrived hope you have some fun with it!

first - mum - there is nothing to stop you doing the same meme on the same day as beccy.

Beccy - have you retried rabbit? It's good - I had it for dinner only last Friday. I think you would like it.

The tongue at WD50 in NYC was pickled beef tongue.

Beccy I am not sure you eat with your eyes - maybe you eat with the misguided misconceptions in your brain. I have eaten (beef) heart - I am sure you wouln't mind it if you like beef and liver. I am really into pigs head right now (head cheese), it's all the rage in SF and last night I had pigs trotters which I could guarantee you would like - they were crispy like little fish cakes with the succulent meat inside. And they LOOK delicious.

Beccy said...

Sam maybe I would like them but I rarely go out and when I do there's nothing like that on the menu!

Sam said...

Aha ! maybe you need to cook offal at home - these are the cheaper cuts of meat.

Maybe you need more recipe books for your collection!

I have a pigs foot (cured) in my fridge, I am not sure what to do with it - it has been there at least 6 months and the only think I have really experimented with so far is pork belly and more pork belly.

Oh - and chicken liver.

You can never go wrong with Italian food.

After looking at Dillon's pictures I have one question - Do you have to drive the girls away?

Kila said...

Gosh, I'm only 4 years from having a 14 yr old boy. My oldest son will soon turn 10. I wish I could keep him this age forever.

Beccy said...

Sam, I've no more room for books, noone would eat offal in this house and I refuse to cook loads of meals.

Karmyn that question was a no brainer! Dillon would be delighted if the girls had to be driven away. He has a girlfriend and lots of friends that are girls but is very insecure about his looks and his acne.

Kila I used to be a bit scared of teenagers but now I have one I realise that they are still really kids and great fun to (most of the time)!

Thanks for the tag Beccy... uhm I think...
I will have to think about this one a little bit and get it out.
I don't know about some of those foods but just can't bring myself to try pig trotters (I'm guessing thats pigs feet, right?) or tongue for that matter. Just can't do it. I can't eat rabbit either, I had those as pets as a kid and would really feel like I was eating a pet.

I can't get the pictures for some reason. Will have a look later.

If you love liver, and you ahve never tried kidneys, I suspect you would lveo thoe too, if you could bear to try.........

Why not try some steak and kidney pie with lots of other trimmings, but get someone else to cook it for you and try it blindfold?!!!!

The freshly caught lobster sounds lovely! I eat fish on the rare occasions i am out for simialr reasons. Also, nice fish bough for a family budget is expensive when ironically, in a restaurant fish is barely more expensive than meat. Bizarre!

I like that meme as I too love to eat and cook.

Beccy said...

Terri, please don't feel any pressure to do the meme, only if you want to.

Sally I don't know what happened to the pictures but I've reloaded them. You're not tempting me with the offal!

Amy, why don't you do it as well?

Sam said...

you have to find room for two more cooking books by next winter.

Theres no pressure Beccy I like meme's just have to think about what to say.
