What's on your dresser?

John over at Publog has asked what's in your dresser? Unlike John I do not have a beautiful old dresser that has been in my family for generations, in fact I don't have a dresser full stop. My house is affectionately known as a shoe box and you'd be lucky to find room at the dinner table if you came visiting. John's dresser is full of antique silver, old photographs and plates with the willow tree pattern. My cupboards are full of cheap china and glasses from Ikea (that way I'm not upset when something gets broken). However I do have one plate that I love hanging on my wall. When I was younger my granny had four plates on her wall, three of which I thought were old fashioned 'fuddy duddy' and this one. I always loved this one and wished that granny would take it down so I could eat my dinner from it. No such luck but when granny moved in with mum she asked me would I like any of her furniture. I asked for the plate, granny offered me all four. I replied that I only wanted the one to which granny said but it's not worth anything the other three are collectibles. I wasn't looking for an antique, I just wanted the plate I spent hours looking at as a child. This plate now hangs on my wall and evokes sweet memories of time spent with my granny.

Objects with memories attached are so much better than antiques. Glad you got the plate I can see why you liked it it's very pretty.

The colors are so calming - I love the combination of blues and greens. I see why you spent so much time looking at it as a child.

granny is so lovely. I never forget when the gave me her clarice cliff jug thereby incensing mum who had been after it for years. I've loaned it to mum in the meantime.

I have some china and crystal that I got as gifts from my first wedding and the china is still in the box and the crystal just came out recently! I don't even have a cabinet to display them in if I wanted to, either.

that's a beautiful plate.

i have willow ware, too. not family heirlooms, but when i was a child i read and loved the book "blue willow" by doris gates.

so when i grew up i started buying random plates and cups from antique stores.

Aww, I'm so glad you have it! It's priceless :)

Actually, I don't have a "dresser" (called a "hutch" over here). I would probably display some of my grandparents'/great-grandparents' old dishes.

I don't really have any furniture up in the house at the moment since we are still moving in so I wouldn't be able to show. We do have Kelly's grandmothers china that he was given when she died although it's in boxes. I've shown pictures of those before in an older post. I love the plate and it's not always the value in dollars but in your heart that counts, isn't it?

Very nice. About 6 moths I saw a dinner and tea set with that very same pattern at our local antique place, which is a converted farm and outbuildings and different dealers rent out units there.

Sorry but I didn't give it much attention (not my cup of tea!)at the time so I don't know who made it or what the asking price was. The antique centre is called "Whitemoors", Nr Mkt Bosworth.

Next time I visit I will get some details for you if it hasn't been sold.

Sorry, my comment should have said "About 6 months ago I saw ..."

My komputer can't spell, and it can't keep up with my fast typing rate (1200 wpm!).

I do like that plate!

I have plates hanging on the soffit in the kitchen - I haven't bought any for awhile because I'm out of room, too.

That is a beautiful plate. I too live in a shoebox, so I feel your pain.

I once got a birthday card in high school. On the outside it had something like,'for your birthday I got you an antique dresser'. Inside is a cartoon drawing of an old man, with a red face, in front of a full length mirror putting on his pants. I always think of that card when people talk about dressers.
