Fun Monday #32

Nikki had a brilliant idea for this weeks Fun Monday, she is:

'...not looking for a story of when you have offered your help in the past, I actually want you in the next two weeks to go out and help someone. Go visit a nursing home, cook dinner for someone sick or with a new baby, donate to a charity or even send just a "thinking of you card" to someone who needs it. It doesn't matter what your good deed is, or how great it is. It just needs to help someone'!

When I read this I was full of plans about how I would help others but alas the hours ran out. As I was lamenting this I realised that a lot of my hours have been spent working for the Parents Association (PA) at Mollie and Ben's school. All the members of the PA are volunteers and give three years serving the PA. I am just coming to the end of my second year and spent the last year as secretary. The PA organises after school activities for the children such as football (soccer), basketball, drama, hockey, Spanish, gymnastics, yoga and swimming lessons; as well as raising funds for the school and providing social activities for the children (bingo night, sports day and a disco). This is a very busy time of year as the children return to school, we send out forms inviting the children to choose which activities they would like to partake in, these forms have to be checked, money counted and all the data inputted into the computer. Then I move into my role as drama coordinator and have to sort out the groups. This year 39 children have asked to be in one group-we have a limit of 18 per group-so 21 children have to be moved to different groups. Last week I spent three days on PA work and I have another two meetings today. Maybe not the good turn Nikki was looking for but it's helping others and the best I can manage this week.

I think giving up that much time is certainly a good deed.

It's amazing that you even get time to blog with your PA responsibilities and being a full time mother - AND tennis! Don't know how you do it.

That sounds more like a JOB to me!!! Golly, if you're doing this without pay, it truly IS a good deed.

Are you kidding, Nikki would have accepted a $10 donation to charity, what you're doing requires much more effort.

However, you have touched on one of my many pet peeves. It galls me that even with all the taxes we pay, our governments rely so heavily on volunteers. Health is the same.

To me, anything one does to help with the care and upbringing of children is a fabulous good deed. The kids will greatly appreciate all your hard work.

Sounds like a full-time job!
It is a good deed for the children who wouldn't have anything else to do otherwise, you're great!

I think that is definitely a good deed. I believe I once commented on your PA work, saying that what you guys do is amazing, we do nothing like that in our SAC.

I think you are doing a lot for others. Good job Beccy.

Beccy, you're absolutely doing a good deed--and one that your children probably love you for even more than they already did.

This is what I find amazing. That you do all this work and give so much of your time...and don't think it's really a good deed. Girl?? It's a good deed. As a matter of fact it's a HUGE deed. And usually one that goes unappreciated. So you rock in my books!

a very deserving cause! that is a lot of work, too!

Good Deed? I agree with hootin'anni - sounds more like a job! So, it is a good deed because you are doing this from the goodness of your heart.

I did PTA for Pete in K and it is a ton of work if you really involve yourself.

And any deed done solely for children is exactly what doing good deeds is all about. Think of how many kids in your drama program are engaged in something worthwhile, rather than sitting in front of the boobtube at home or worse!!!

Good on ya!

(argh - I can't type straight)

This definitely qualifies!! I used to help with the PTA. I also used to serve on the board of an International women's organisation - and it's incredibly hard work!

I prefer to do other good deeds now. So, I really admire you and other people who donate their time and make a long term commitment like this!

I agree with everyone else....you sound very busy!

Three years of volunteering certainly constitutes a good deed.

Oh, and I'm getting your books to you soon. I promise.

I agree that giving your time like that is a very good deed.

By volunteering in the PA ..from the get go you offered 3 years to that cause...which is a great cause...but knowingly giving 3 years of your time and effort is a GREAT deed! High 5 girl!!
In the states there is no time requirement to volunteer in the PTA.
I think what you are doing is selfless and amazing! I find it is the same parents volunteering as well!

It's the same the world over Beccy. I did my time on kindergarten and school committees, including chairperson and secretary duties. When the boys were in high school I was voted on to the board of trustees where you were actually paid to attend meetings. Not a great deal, I think it was about $50 for a monthly meeting which lasted about 3 hours.

Beccy, this is a very good deed indeed!

that good deed elevates you to SAINTHOOD

You might not think it's that exciting, but PA work is a job and a half. Wow!

Wow, that is a lot of stuff to do and I agree with Willowtree about the amount of taxes...

It is too bad the 80-20 rule applies to so many areas of volunteering, 20% of the people doing 80% of the work.

Definitely a job! And certainly a good deed for others!
