No matter how tired you are or how busy you are, never, ever be tempted to put your favourite brown jumper in the washing machine on a cold wash. It is not the same as hand washing in cold water. It will shrink.
Your eleven year old daughter may be delighted as she will have gained a new jumper.

Ok you can fix this!!! I have used this before and it worked on some materials, not on others, but it never damaged them, so if it doesn't work, Mollie will still have a new jumper!
Get a bottle of conditioner (cheap stuff VO5 or something is fine) and fill up the sink with luke warm water. Add the whole bottle of conditioner and stir until dissolved. Add the sweater and allow to soak for about an hour.
Gently pull and stretch it out. The conditioner will have softened the fibres back and it should work with you!
Wash on COLD! ;-)

Oh! I hate it when that happens! That's almost worse than forgetting to check the husband's pockets and washing AND drying everything plus the ink pen that leaked over your favorite shirt in the whole wide world.

I've done that so many times it's not even funny. I've done the stretch thing before and it does work on some fabrics but not all. Hopefully this is one! It doesn't hurt to try because like she said it won't ruin it either way.
