I received your letter yesterday regarding the three hour detention given to Dillon for 'changing out of his school uniform during break time'. Please could you clarify how wearing your coat instead of the school hoody constitutes changing out of the uniform and also do you expect children to always wear their hoodies even if they are wet (from our climate) or in very hot weather?

Sounds incredibly pedantic to me. You would hope they have better things to worry about.
I agree with hellojed! 3 hours detention is too long (and uncalled for) in my book.
So what is the answer~ wear it come what may regardless of weather! Did Dillon give them grief you know what he's like for his clever smart alec remarks. Three hours is excessive!
We never had Uniform here until this school year! If you don't school colors, they do send the kids home now. 3 hr detention is too long to me, a phone call to the parents to let them know would have been enough!!
wowser!
i'd be furious, too.
do they expect little kids to sit there soaked all afternoon?
can you fight this??? that seems very unreasonable
I agree 3 hours is unreasonable. You'll have to let us know what the school policy is - maybe they can only take them off if the official thermometer is above 30c!
Good grief, what do they do do the students who actually do something wrong? Flog them.
That's just ridiculous.
Perhaps Dillon got one hour detention for the uniform change and and extra two hours for his clever smart alec remarks?
3 hours is ridiculous. Is his teacher some control freak? I thought detentions were for bad behaviour. Taking off a hoodie - shouldn't all they have to do is ask him to put it back on again?
three hours, are they kidding! how long do they give for doing something seriously wrong then
I agree with all others 3 hours detention is unreasonable.
We never had a school uniform here in Germany.
3 hours! Seems a bit over the top for not wearing a hoody.
3 hours of detention is ridiculous for something like that. Something that, as far as I am concerned, is not even breaking the rules!
Three hours! Wow, I would hate to see what the punishment would be for a real offense....
THREE hours???? That is ridiculous! Do you need back up from all of your bloggy friends? We'll come to Ireland and stir some trouble! I'll make my "Free Dillon!" sign right now.
Can anybody else hear Pink Floyd, Another Brick In the Wall playing? That's outrageous - 3 hours? Maybe all your blogging friends can bombard the school with emails expressing our disgust at the excessive punishment.
That seems a little harsh - 3 hours for changing out of a wet shirt?
oh, I dread Punkin starting school! I envision a letter home each day.
Three hours seems like an awful lot of detentions for breaking such a silly rule!
Oh my gosh, I'd be livid. It's not like he's really making any REAL trouble like talking back to a teacher, or defacing school property or anything dangerous to threaten the lives of the other school children or faculty.
That's way too excessive!! I agree there are worse things to worry about!
Pathetic!! Nuff said.
Reading this just makes me angry. Who do they think they are, anyway? Argh.
geez - they went a little overboard huh?
That's idiotic. They really need to re-evalute what's important enough to hand out 3-hour detentions...because that's not something even registering on the scale of punishable behavior if you ask me.
go get 'em with your tennis racquet
Thank you all for your kind comments, we also feel three hours is way too long but that is the standard time of a detention whatever the 'crime'. I'm waiting for a reply from the school before I decide what to do next but we are considering refusing to allow Dillon to attend the detention, I just have to find out what the ramifications will be. Dillon is mortified and just wants to go and get it all over and done with.
Bit blinking draconian!!!!
ps....the punishment I mean, not your repsonse. I TOTALLY agree with you!
wow, 3 hrs seems a bit extreme....hope you can get it sorted out one way or the other....
3 hours for putting on a coat instead of his hoodie? That is totally excessive!! I mean geez maybe he was cold?
3 Hours?! They just keeping getting more stupid with the rules. Are they going to provide dry hoodies for any child who soils his while at school?
At my kids' high school in TX they gave the child a school t-shirt to wear if they wore inappropriate shirts to school. The school kept the "offensive shirt" until the t-shirt was brought back laundered. :) My daughter did it once and liked the t-shirt better. She still has it.
no?! have you followed up with the school? 3 hours is a hell of a punishment
